Lead the voice of the BMLSIA blog: set the editorial standard, guide a team of writers, and turn laboratory science and community health work into stories people trust and share.
We’re looking for an Editor-in-Chief who cares as much about accuracy as they do about a good sentence.
The BMLSIA blog is where our science, our programs, and our people reach the public. It covers biomedical laboratory science, health education, community outreach, student and fellow stories, and the products we build. It needs someone to own what gets published, how it reads, and whether it can be trusted.
You’ll run the editorial side end to end: planning the calendar, commissioning and shaping pieces, editing for clarity and correctness, and making the final call before anything goes live. You’ll work directly with leadership, the communications team, and our content writers, and you’ll publish through our own admin console, so there’s no clunky CMS standing between you and the reader.
This is a leadership role. If you’ve edited a publication, a newsletter, a student journal, or a campaign, and you’ve held a team to a standard without being a bottleneck, you’ll feel at home.
Responsibilities
Set the editorial voice, style guide, and quality bar for the BMLSIA blog
Plan and run a monthly editorial calendar across science explainers, program updates, features, and opinion
Commission, assign, and edit articles from content writers, fellows, and guest contributors
Review every piece for accuracy, clarity, tone, and structure before it is published
Work with subject experts to fact-check health and laboratory content and add sources where needed
Mentor and give clear feedback to writers so the team improves with every piece
Own the publishing workflow: drafts, review, cover images, summaries, categories, tags, and scheduling in the admin console
Use reader data (views, visits, reads) to decide what to publish more of and what to retire
Work with Communications on distribution: newsletter, social, and partner channels
Protect the organisation: flag sensitive, medical, or legal risks before they go live
Requirements
Proven editing and writing experience (publication, journal, newsletter, magazine, or comparable)
Excellent command of English grammar, structure, and style, with a sharp eye for clarity
Experience leading, briefing, and giving feedback to writers or contributors
Ability to verify claims and sources, especially on health or science topics
Strong organisation and time management, with a record of hitting publishing deadlines
Comfortable with digital publishing: web editors, basic SEO, and image selection
Judgement on sensitive content, including health information, consent, and attribution
Nice to have: a science, health, or biomedical background, experience with analytics (Google Analytics), or experience running a blog or newsletter from scratch
What you get
Full editorial ownership of a growing public platform
A byline and public profile on the BMLSIA blog
Direct access to leadership, scientists, and field programs for real stories
A custom-built admin console with a rich text editor, author profiles, and reader analytics
Mentorship, references, and a strong leadership credential for your portfolio
Room to grow into a head of content or communications role as BMLSIA scales
